Uses the ADAG formula (Nathan et al., Diabetes Care 2008) and the NGSP–IFCC master equation. Results are estimates, not a diagnosis. Your own meter readings may differ.
What Is HbA1c (A1C)?
HbA1c, also called A1C, glycated hemoglobin or glycosylated hemoglobin, is a blood test that shows the percentage of your hemoglobin that has sugar (glucose) attached to it. Red blood cells live for about three months, so the result reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past 2 to 3 months, with the most recent weeks counting the most.
Doctors use it to screen for prediabetes, to diagnose diabetes, and to check how well treatment is working. Unlike a finger-prick reading, it is not affected by a single meal, and it does not require fasting. Labs report it in two ways: percent (%), the NGSP unit used in Pakistan, India, the US and many other countries, and mmol/mol, the IFCC unit used in the UK and much of Europe.
HbA1c Calculation Formula
The link between A1C and average glucose comes from the A1c-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study. This calculator uses these equations:
Worked example: A1C 8% → 28.7 × 8 − 46.7 = 182.9 mg/dL (about 10.2 mmol/L) and (8 − 2.15) × 10.929 = 64 mmol/mol. To convert mg/dL to mmol/L yourself, divide by 18.

Normal HbA1c Range (Adults)
The American Diabetes Association (ADA), CDC and NIDDK use the same cut-offs for diagnosis in adults:
| Category | A1C (%) | A1C (mmol/mol) | Estimated avg glucose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 5.7% | Below 39 | Below ~117 mg/dL |
| Prediabetes | 5.7% to 6.4% | 39 to 47 | ~117 to ~137 mg/dL |
| Diabetes | 6.5% or higher | 48 or higher | ~140 mg/dL or more |
Diagnosis normally needs two abnormal results, from the same test at two times or from two different tests, unless a person has clear symptoms with very high blood sugar. For people already living with diabetes, the ADA generally suggests an A1C goal of below 7% for many non-pregnant adults, but doctors often set a looser or tighter target based on age, other illnesses, hypoglycemia risk and pregnancy plans.
Normal HbA1c by age
The diagnostic ranges above apply to all adults; there is no separate "normal for 60-year-olds" range for diagnosis. Treatment goals do vary by age and health: older adults with several health problems may be given a higher target to avoid dangerous low blood sugar, while children and teens with diabetes follow pediatric targets set by their care team.
What Do HbA1c 6, 7 and 9 Mean?
HbA1c of 6 (6.0%)
Estimated average glucose is about 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or 42 mmol/mol. This is in the prediabetes range. It is a warning sign, not a diagnosis, and weight loss, regular activity and a healthier diet can often bring it back down.
HbA1c of 7 (7.0%)
Estimated average glucose is about 154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L) or 53 mmol/mol. It is in the diabetes range and is also the common treatment goal for many adults who already have diabetes.
HbA1c of 9 (9.0%)
Estimated average glucose is about 212 mg/dL (11.7 mmol/L) or 75 mmol/mol. This is well above most targets, and sustained levels like this raise the risk of eye, kidney, nerve and heart complications. It calls for a prompt review of treatment with your doctor, not self-adjustment of medicines.
When HbA1c Can Be Misleading
A1C depends on red blood cells, so anything that changes their number, age or structure can distort it. According to NIDDK and MedlinePlus, the result may be unreliable in:
- Anemia, including iron-deficiency anemia (can read falsely high) and recent blood loss or transfusion
- Hemoglobin variants such as sickle cell trait or thalassemia, which can interfere with some lab methods
- Kidney failure, dialysis or liver disease
- Pregnancy, when red-cell turnover changes
- Some medicines, such as erythropoietin and certain HIV drugs
If your A1C does not match your glucose meter or lab glucose results, ask your doctor about a fasting plasma glucose test, an oral glucose tolerance test or a fructosamine test.
How to Lower HbA1c Safely
- Take medicines exactly as prescribed. Newer drug classes such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 medicines lower A1C by different mechanisms and are chosen by your doctor.
- Move daily. Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or similar activity, spread over most days.
- Improve your plate. Reduce sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates (white bread, sweets, large portions of rice), and add vegetables, lentils, protein and fiber.
- Lose excess weight. Even a modest loss improves insulin sensitivity.
- Sleep and stress. Poor sleep and chronic stress can push glucose up.
- Monitor and retest. Log meter readings and repeat A1C as advised, because meaningful change takes about 3 months to show.
HbA1c Test: Fasting, Timing and Frequency
- Fasting: Not required. You can test at any time of day.
- Sample: A small venous blood sample, or a finger-prick on point-of-care devices.
- How often: Commonly at least twice a year when stable, and about every 3 months when treatment changes or goals are not met.
- Lab method: For diagnosis, use a lab method certified by the NGSP (National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program).
- Diampa Tablet (empagliflozin) uses, dosage, side effects & price: an SGLT2 inhibitor used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.
- Ozempic Injection (semaglutide): price, uses, dosage & side effects: a once-weekly injection that helps lower A1C and may support weight loss.

HbA1c Calculator FAQs
What is a normal HbA1c level?
A normal HbA1c is below 5.7% (below 39 mmol/mol). A result of 5.7% to 6.4% (39 to 47 mmol/mol) falls in the prediabetes range, and 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) or higher is in the diabetes range, according to the American Diabetes Association, CDC and NIDDK.
How do I calculate HbA1c from average blood sugar?
Use the ADAG formula: A1C (%) = (average glucose in mg/dL + 46.7) ÷ 28.7. For example, an average glucose of 154 mg/dL gives an A1C of about 7%. To work in mmol/L, use A1C (%) = (average glucose in mmol/L + 2.59) ÷ 1.59.
What does an HbA1c of 7 mean?
An HbA1c of 7% equals an estimated average glucose of about 154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L) and 53 mmol/mol. It is in the diabetes range, and 7% is also the general goal the American Diabetes Association suggests for many non-pregnant adults with diabetes. Individual targets can be higher or lower.
What does an HbA1c of 9 mean?
An HbA1c of 9% corresponds to an estimated average glucose of about 212 mg/dL (11.7 mmol/L) and 75 mmol/mol. This is well above most treatment targets, so it is a signal to review your treatment plan with a doctor rather than to change doses on your own.
What does an HbA1c of 6 mean?
An HbA1c of 6.0% equals an estimated average glucose of about 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and 42 mmol/mol. It falls in the prediabetes range (5.7% to 6.4%), which means blood sugar is higher than normal but below the diabetes threshold. Lifestyle changes can often prevent progression.
Do I need to fast before an HbA1c test?
No. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past 2 to 3 months, so you can have the test at any time of day without fasting. A fasting plasma glucose test is a separate test and does need fasting.
How often should HbA1c be tested?
Many guidelines suggest testing at least twice a year if your diabetes is stable and you are meeting your goals, and about every 3 months if your treatment has changed or you are not at goal. Your doctor will set the schedule that fits you.
Why can my HbA1c not match my glucose meter readings?
HbA1c is an average that is weighted toward recent weeks and depends on the lifespan of red blood cells. Anemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, and hemoglobin variants (such as thalassemia trait or sickle cell trait) can make A1C read falsely high or low. Your own average can also differ from the formula's estimate.
Can I diagnose diabetes using this HbA1c calculator?
No. The calculator only converts values and shows which standard range a number falls in. Diabetes is diagnosed by a doctor, usually with two abnormal results on the same test or on two different tests, unless there are clear symptoms with very high blood sugar.
HbA1c normal range kya hai? (اردو میں جواب)
